Tourism in the Indian Ocean – A Development Axis for MSMEs

Tourism plays a crucial role in the economies of the islands under the Indian Ocean Commission. However, each island has its own unique characteristics while sharing similarities. Madagascar boasts enormous potential in eco-tourism due to its rich biodiversity and unique endemic species. Nosy Be in the north is famous for its stunning beaches, while Sainte Marie in the northeast is a prime location for whale watching, offering a spectacular attraction for visitors. Malagasy handicrafts also provide employment, particularly for women. Mauritius is renowned for its beautiful beaches and its diverse cultural heritage. The Seychelles archipelago primarily offers breathtaking beaches, while Réunion Island is famous for its inland tourism. All the islands are fairly well connected by air routes, though cruise tourism remains an area with significant development potential.
